Background: Frosts are a type of sprite detailed in one of the FR MC's,
they are found in cold regions, are immune to could and have various cold
powers. One in 6 can do a Frost Ray that does 6d4 cold damage. They are
fond of practical jokes, like all sprites, though their favorite is dumping
snow on passer-bys. This details one of the items the make for those that
do them a service.
History: Found throughout the Northern lands, particularly coniferous
forests, Frosts take up the role of "sylvan creature" where pixies find it
to cold to tread. These fun loving creatures are known and befriended by
most Druids and Rangers of the North, as well as by the various, scattered
Elven Populations found throughout the North. Living in these harsh
regions, these small sprites often find themselves in need of assistance
from bigger, stronger allies. When the mission is particularly dangerous,
or difficult, the sprites will use whatever magic they have at their
disposal to help their allies. One of the most common items they give
their allies are Frosts' Strings, Magical Bowstrings to empower their
allies bows. (Frosts of the Northern Great Glacier and Mt. Sundabar Region
typically make Crossbow Strings, as that is the preferred weapon of their
Avriel Allies). Approximately 1 in 40 Frosts know the secret of making
these strings.
Any who aid these sprites are likely to be given one of these bowstrings
as a reward. Any Druid or Ranger whose assigned territory encompasses a
land where many of these sprites dwell, is likely to receive one as well.
Also, the sprites can instantly know whether someone has earned a string,
or simply acquired one from someone else. They will taunt that person
mercilessly.
Appearance: These Items appear as silvery bowstrings that feel cold to
the touch. This touch causes no damage, nor does it have any other harmful
effect on the bow man.
Powers: When placed on an ordinary bow, these strings empower the arrow
with a slight amount of elemental ice. This manifests as a +1 bonus to
damage from, any arrow fired from it, with the exception of arrows that
cause cold damage, or arrows that just come into being due to properties of
the bow. This does not confer upon any arrow the ability to strike any
creature that requires a magical weapon to hit, though any creatures with
any sort of susceptibility to cold, will suffer the 1 point of Cold Damage
(creatures which suffer x2 or x3 damage to cold, will take 2, or 3 pts of
damage).
These bowstrings may be added to magical bows and crossbows only if the
string is NOT part of the magic of the Bow. (Ask your DM). As a
guideline, bowstrings made of exotic components usually contribute to the
magic of a bow. Crossbows of distance, and similar Bows almost always
require the string to be enchanted. Some testing may be required to
determine whether or not a Frosts' String may be added to the magical bow
in question.
