History: Before Tu'Lung parted from the rest of Shou Lung, the greatest
of the Samurais was Quan Huang. Risen from the frontier as the 3rd son of
a minor noble, his name was known throughout the East. Dragons, Demons,
and all manner of evil Spirit Folk fell beneath his blade. Once, he stood
against an entire hoard of oni, and emerged, triumphant, with less than a
dozen left able to flee. However, it was not until his 50th year that his
goal in life was defined.
On one of his missions to the wild, savage, southern frontier, he met the
youngest daughter of a minor noble. They fell in love almost at once, and
the noble was gladdened to have his daughter (Sung-Yo), marry such an
honorable warrior (90 honor). She, herself, was strong in the mystic arts,
and would eventually create the enchanted armor he bore into battle. She
bore him 6 sons, all of which grew strong and took up their father's role
as samurai. It was on their eldest sons wedding day that disaster struck.
A clan of Ninja (name never known), poisoned (mystic in nature, so no spell
could neutralize it) the wine served at the festivities, and all present,
including most of Quan's family died. Only 2 of the nearly 1,000 guests
survived. Quan, due to a token (an amulet with several Wishes; he didn't
even know he used it to survive), and Sung-Yo, (one of her gesas was the
partaking of Alcohol). Weeping at the devastation brought, by the unseen
assassins, Quan swore to eradicate all ninja from the face of Shou-Lung.
For over 40 years, he sought ninja, from the monasteries of Tabot, to the
Islands of Wa. He was extremely successful, or so he thought, but the
ninja were more populace and pervasive, than he, or anyone could have
thought. Neither were the ninja able to eradicate their foe, he survived
over 100 attempts at his life. Finally approaching nearly a century of
life, his thought drifted to his death, he was no longer as skilled, or as
quick with his Katana (a gift from the emperor of Wa). At last, he
resolved to ride to his death in glorious battle, fighting the great
Thunder Dragon that had terrorized the Northern Lands for decades. As he
left hid distraught wife, he began his trek towards his death.
Nearly 3 months later he returned, one arm crushed, a hand severed, one
eye destroyed, and severely burned. But, he returned (through the use of
the last Wish, though, again, he never realized he used it. It became
clear that he had suffered fatal injuries in his battle with the wyrm.
Yet, railing against his useless non-honorable death, it was his wife,
Sung-Yo, who, tearfully gave him the suggestion on a way to die with honor.
Immediately, he approved of her plan.
The greatest sword smith in all Wa was commissioned to make the finest
blade he had ever attempted. He succeeded. One night, nearly a year
later, with only the spells keeping him alive, upon a bed of the finest
silk, Quan plunged the shining blade through his chest and into his heart.
Tears falling onto the sheets, his wife of over sixty years, began the
spells to imbue the sword with his essence, so that his fight could
continue for as long as ninjas walked the land.
When the spells were completed, the Katana now known as Golden Warrior
disappeared to find one worthy of wielding it.
Appearance: Golden Warrior appears as a Kantana of exceptional
workmanship. The length of it's blade is embossed with scenes of Quan's
greatest victories. The hilt is made entirely of gold, with silver, tear
drop shaped specks of silver. Despite being made of such a soft metal, the
hilt is stronger than the most powerfully forged dwarven steel. If its
wielder is honorable enough, the blade will taken on the golden appearance,
and might even have flecks of ice cold golden mist drifting off of it.
Powers: Katana +(see below), Int 17, Ego 45 (164, see below), Telepathy
and Speech(High Shou), knows Shou, Wa, Bakemono, Gold Dragon, & Celestial
Bureaucracy languages); only usable by L.G. non-thieves.
Constant Powers:
Detect Traps 10' radius.
Detect Secret/Concealed Doors 15' Radius.
Detect Invisibility.
May drink Salt water as fresh, but this always leaves behind a feeling of
loss, sadness, and regret.
Never surprised/ambushed (this only works while the wielder is asleep).
Invoked Powers:
Teleport w/out Error-1/day;
Detect Magic 5/day;
Commune (Celestial Bureaucracy)- 1/tenday;
Know Alignment 1/day; True seeing-1/tenday;
All other powers depend on the amount of honor the wielder:
Less than 20: Can not wield
20-29: +1, Ninja slayer. x2 damage to rogues, x3 to Ninja. Heal 1d8 H.P.1/day
30-39: +2 Sunblade. Heal an additional 1d8 H.P. 1/day
40-49: +3 Frost Brand. Additional 1d8 H.P. 1/day.
50-69: +4 Defender. One more d8 of healing.
70-89: +5 Holy Avenger, usable by any L.G. fighter. Another d8 Healing.
90-99: Katana of Quickness
100+: Katana of Sharpness
Note: All non "plus" powers are cumulative. I.e. a Paladin with 45 Honor,
would wield a +3 Frostbrand, that did x2(3) damage to rogues (ninjas), +4
vs evil, double damage to undead, +6 vs fire using dwelling creatures.
With the ability to do a Sunray, and 50% chance to extinguish fires.
Drawbacks: Its intelligent, probably smarter than you, and definitely
older than you. It thinks it knows more than you do, and its probably
right. Golden Warrior will not allow its wielder to take any action that
would result in a loss of honor (unless that action would save his life, a
lesson learned at the cost of a good warrior's life). Also, rather than
using its ego score to determine artifact possession, Golden Warrior uses
Quan's Honor total he had when he died: 164. This means he can probably
take over whenever he wants, but he prefers to refrain from this sort of
action. Golden warrior will not tolerate the presence of ninjas, a wielder
must always attack one on sight (of course since ninjas don't advertise,
this comes up very infrequently) (note, after a disastrous costume ball,
while Que-tang (Sam-12), was visiting Raven's Bluff 80 yrs ago, Golden
Warrior now might pause to confirm his suspicions). Through the centuries
Golden Warrior has learned not ALL thieves need to die, so a thief, if he
restricts his illegal activities, might be allowed to live. Also, won't
strike a human(oid) female, unless ninja/thief. Note: Succubi no longer
count as "female".
Notes to those without Oriental Adventures: The key concept here is
Honor. It is gained in small amounts, but lost in larger amounts. If you
give this sword to a PC, determine his honor through role-playing. If he
does something you feel IS honorable, give him a point, if he does
something dishonorable, subtract 1d4 points.
