History: Wherever organizations for good do their work, organizations of
evil try to infiltrate them. But, with Detect Evil, Know Alignment, and
other spells, it is extremely difficult to uphold any pretense for long.
These Bracers were developed a long time ago for just that mission: The
long term infiltration and betrayal of Organizations for Good. Who first
designed these items is unknown, some say Mask, some Set, and others Bhaal.
Whoever first designed is irrelevant, as minions of all the evil gods, and
collectives such as the Zhentarim, Kraken Society, Knights of the Shield,
etc, have all discovered the secrets to their creation.
Appearance: These items appear as Brilliant Silver Bracers of the finest
quality. Most (90%), are engraved with the Holy Symbol of a Lawful Good
Deity (Torm, Tyr, etc..), 5% have the Holy Symbol of Some other
Good/Neutral Deity, 4% contain the Heraldry of some
Nation/Realm/Organization (Cormyr, Shadowdale, Knight of Myth Drannor),
that might/might not still be existence. The Other 1% are blank, and carry
no symbol at all.
Powers: These Items all function as Bracers of Defense, determine the
A.C. value in the DMG. However these items also contain one more powerful
aspect; the ability to cloak one's own alignment. These items come in two
strengths, depending on the Creator's Level.
If the Creator is a wizard or priest of less 19th level or less (80%
chance), the wearer's alignment radiates as an extreme Lawful Good, similar
to a Paladin, to any wizard spell of 5th level or less, and Priest Spell of
4th or less, and any innate powers, (such as a Paladin's Detect Evil) of a
person of less than 15th level.
If the Creator was 20th or above, the Wearer radiates an alignment of
extreme Lawful Good to all divinational magics and effects of less than
divine status. In short, his true alignment is undetectable.
Any one, of any class or alignment can wear a set of these bracers, but
their alignment will appear to be Lawful Good. (i.e. a CG Thief would
appear to be L.G., even if found sneaking out the third floor window with
the crown jewels.)
Although the wearer's apparent alignment is LG, that does not need affect
his actions, (though playing a paladin will be questioned, investigated,
and possibly discovered, if the involve themselves in assassinations,
torture, or other non-LG behavior). In short, the DM, may allow NPC's an
Int check if a PC repeatedly verves off the Path of Righteousness (modified
by how good/bad his excuse is). Similarly if an NPC engages in unlawful
and ungood behavior repeatedly, the PC's should get an Int check to
discover the ruse. (proficiencies such as religion and acting, may be
helpful in putting up a decent forgery.
This is an item I designed to allow a LE wizard into my Warriors of Heaven
game. It forced him to be very careful and modify his actions in front of
the Others in the party. He was good enough to become default party leader.
