Teeth of Tyr
History: One of the newest Holy Swords in the Realms, the Teeth of Tyr,
was made just over a year ago. (my campaign year is 1370 DR). It has had
only one wielder, and that is the story behind this item.

Two years ago, at the Mosque to Tyr, near Daggerford, a loyal war dog was
grievously wounded fighting off a handful of Manes summoned from the
Abyssal depths. A visiting High Priest Gunthor HighStout, realized the dog
was beyond help. Then, however, his wizard companion, Relfus (CN H-M
Tra18), suggested that the brave dog's soul could now be used in the
service of Tyr. You see, he had just finished reading a illegal copy of
Volo's Guide to All Things Magical, and wanted to try some things out. He
persuaded the local priests of the Mosque to allow them to use some of
their precious Scrolls of Permanency Prayers, along with the dog's soul, to
create a sentient weapon dedicated to Tyr. The dog's soul was trapped in a
Focal Gem, and a Two-Handed sword was commissioned from the Dwarves of
Illfaern. The Marvelous, gold embossed blade took a month to make.
Finally, all was ready, and the priests began their enchantment. After 6
days of work, the Focal Gem (10,000 GP Diamond), was attached to the hilt,
and all held their breath. With a sigh, a voice spoke, "Bring forth the
enemies of good, and I Shall slay them, so says Reginald, Teeth of Tyr".
The Clerics rejoiced, for the dogs name had, indeed, been Reginald.

The Clerics gave the Teeth of Tyr to their highest ranking Paladin, Sir
Wethan (LG HM Pal-6), who set forth to vanquish evil. It was not evil that
was vanquished.

On his first foray, into the Lizard Marsh, Sir Wethan and his party of
war-priest were attacked by a group of Brute Crocodilians (Dragon 268), and
the Master Crocodilian leader. As Wethan raised his mighty sword to parry
the first blow from the massive lizard's club, the Teeth of Tyr Shattered,
and Wethan's skull was caved in. You see, the blade had had a minor
imperfection when made, that not even the dwarves had noticed, so when the
lizard's strike landed just right the sword blasted apart.

However, the clerics retreated, but were able to grab both Wethan and the
sword. They returned to the Mosque were Wethan was raised, and the clerics
attempted to restore Reginald. An emissary was immediately dispatched to
Illfaern, where, after mush denial and hew-hawing, a master smith, and
priest of Dumathoin (Keljack), was sent to see what he could do. Upon his
arrival he asked for a Blessed forge and Hammer and set to repair the
blade. Two days went by, and all that was heard was the endless hammering
from the Dwarf. At last he came out from the Forge, and as the assembled
clerics waited, Keljack said "Here's your Holy Sword, not quite as big,
mind you, but it'll keep the enchantment. Why's it always got to be
swords? Ain't no humans realize a good axe'll take a sword any day?, Ah,
well, here's yer blade." And he held out a Dagger with an 10,000 GP Diamond.

Powers: Dagger: Holy Avenger+5 Int 11, Ego 25 Communicates with telepathy
(wielder only), or speech. This sword has several additional powers as
well. It allows its wielder to speak with any canine at will. It provides
Detect Tanar'rii at a 500' radius. The following powers can be initiated
by the wielder:

  1. Mournful Howl: 1/day, The dagger emits a yowl that causes fear in all
within a 30' Radius, unless a save vs. spell is made.

  2. Monster summoning 1: 1/day. This spell will summon 1d4 war dogs to do
     the Paladin's bidding.

  3. Additional Lay on Hands: 1/day. Only usable on injured animals.

A few other powers were added after its breaking in the Lizard Marsh:

  1. Speak Dwarven, and allow its wielder to do the same.

  2. When a paladin is capable of casting spells, he may also cast from
     Elemental: Earth

  3. Mending 2/day: As the Wizard Spell

Role playing: To put it mildly, Reginald feels a bit inferior, he will
not permit his owner to use any weapon that is larger than he is, which is
most. If forced, he will wait till he can Possess his wielder and make him
give away all hi large weapons "for charity".

The Clerics of Tyr at the Mosque are currently looking for someone to take
up the blade. They want someone worthy, yet able to look imposing while
pointing a dagger at a hill giant. Alas, so far they have not succeeded.
