Alter Fire
Mage Level: 2
Range: 10 yards
Casting time: 4
Duration: Special
Area of Effect: 5 cubic feet of fire per level
Components: V,S,M
Saving Throw: None

Alter Fire allows a mage to alter one of the attributes of a fire for every
four level of experience he has gained. These attributes are limited to the
color, shape, heat level, and light level. Magical fire and extraordinary
fire (such as a red dragon's breath or fire from the Elemental Plane of
Fire) are not affected by this spell and casting it on such fires will cause
nothing to happen except the loss of the spell.

Changing the color of the fire does nothing except make the fire a different
color. Changing the shape of the fire will cause other things to burn as
long as the new shape of the fire is the same area of effect at the original
fire. In other words, the caster can not make a fire larger or smaller once
the Alter Fire spell is cast.

Alter Fire can be used to make a fire hotter or cooler. If the fire is made
to be hotter, then an damage caused by the application of this fire will be
increased by +1 for every four levels of the caster. If the fire is made
cooler, then the fire's damage is reduced by 1 point for every four levels
of the caster, to a minimum of 1 point for die of damage. Hotter fires burn
faster and any fuel placed on the fire is consumed twice as fast. Likewise
cooler fires burn slower increasing the time that the fuel last by half
again as much (i.e. a fire with an hour's worth of fuel will last for a half
hour if the fire is made hotter and an hour and a half if made cooler).

When the spell is used to change the light level of a fire, the fire will
give off more or less light, though at no time can the mage make a fire
invisible or so it gives off no light. The mage can alter the fire's
lighting by 10% for every level of experience. The percentage also affects
the sighting distance that the fire allows. For example, a torch
illuminates a 30' radius. If a 5th level mage casts this spell and
increases the light given off my this spell, he increases the light level by
50%, allowing the torch to illuminate 45' instead of 30'. Similarly if the
same mage decreases the light of the fire, he can decrease it 50%, making
the fire illuminate a radius of only 15'.

The duration of this spell depends on the fire that the spell was originally
cast upon. the effects of the spell last until the original fuel is
consumed. Any additional fuel will not increase the duration of the fire.
At the end of the spell, the fire is extinguished, even if additional fuel
was added to the fire affected by this spell.

The material components for this spell is a piece of precious wood soaked in
a special fluid of flammable liquids. Each casting of the spell only
consumes 5gp worth of the material component so a sizable chuck of wood and
marinade might be left over by the casting of the spell.
