Only the Shadow Knows

When morning arrived, we were more rested, but couldn't move the rubble, since it turned out to be mostly one huge boulder. So I got elected to climb over it and search for more traps. Actually, I wasn't that good at finding traps at the time, so it was fortunate there really weren't any. Once everyone else joined me, we stared in awe at the paintings on the walls. There were mighty battles, and even mightier parties. Yeah, we elves really know how to live it up?

The door at the end of the corridor had the inscription "Lord Mirconowen of Drannor." The lock in the door had an obvious needle trap, but I couldn't disarm it. I poked a broken arrow into it to spring it on purpose, and liquid squirted out, just missing my hand. We had to break the door down, since I also couldn't pick the lock. I resolved to practice working with locks and traps when we got out of this stinking place.

The room smelled bad, and a feeling of dread came over us. There was an altar on a dais at one end, two chests, and another sarcophagus. The floors were polished granite and the ceiling very high. Lagasse and Lyra went to look at the tomb, but shouted when they noticed a shadow coming down the wall toward them. I cast magic missile on it, but Lyra still got hit twice before Lagasse killed it. It disappeared, so I hope it was killed.

Lyra felt pretty weak, so we let her rest while we searched. The chests contained ten pounds of gold, a bunch of platinum, and some gems, including a small diamond. Also, two silver candlesticks, three priest scrolls, two potions, and? a RING! It was silver and had undecipherable runes written on it. The sarcophagus had no body in it, but wasn't empty. There was a gold crown, a really nice looking long sword, and a suit of ring mail. Of course, I ended up carrying everything, since I was the only one strong enough, but I really didn't mind. It's the least I can do, since I often can't join in fights like the others do.

We were glad to leave that place. Hopefully every soul within was at rest. Still, I had to wonder who was in the king's sarcophagus if the hidden chamber was supposed to be for the king? Maybe the shadow was the king. I didn't know; I just wanted to take a hot bath. On the way back, we found the horses we had tracked before. We used them to get back to town, then donated them to the temple. Why, I'm not sure. I think Mical and Lyra wanted to get on their good side.
