During the first watch on the first night, Lagasse heard barking and yelping in the distance, and woke Mical. After a while, it sounded like they were circling the camp, so they woke us too. Four started coming close, and Mical tried to befriend and soothe them. (Aha! I think he is a ranger-priest.) One of them ran away, but the other three wagged their tails, and six more cautiously approached. Suddenly, they all started growling and ran off. We could hear them circling for about an hour, then they ran away. We didn't want to mess with them if they weren't going to attack.
In the morning, it was sunny, breezy, and peaceful. It was one of those days where you are glad to be alive. The day was uneventful until late afternoon, when Mical, who kept wandering off and exploring, popped back onto the path to tell us about what he'd found. He saw two large statues with bald heads in the distance.
He led us to the site. The statues, sitting on fallen tree trunks, were humanoid and seemed to be made of granite. They were slightly eroded, and plants grew over their feet. When we got within ten feet, they rose and ran toward us. We all ran for our lives. Lagasse and I ended up going one direction, and Lyra and Mical another. Lyra was carrying too much; she isn't strong, and was moving so slow! Luckily for her they followed Lagasse and I. We alternated shooting arrows and running to stay ahead of them. Eventually we couldn't see the others.
When we hit them with arrows, tiny flakes came off, but they didn't seem to notice. One of them then disappeared. Later, we found out that Mical had followed us, but got hit and had run again, with one of them following him. Lagasse finally started using his sword, and I almost shot him a couple times. We were a bit winded, but after a long battle, Lagasse hit it in the stomach and it exploded. Dirt and pebbles rained down for a few moments, then we ran back toward where we thought the others were.
There was no sign of them there, but we could sort of follow the path the statue had left. Afterward, they told us that Lyra had become exhausted and couldn't run anymore. Mical also had to stop running, so they faced it. Lyra cast entangle, but it was unaffected, so she cast faerie fire. Mical was hit badly by its stone fists. Finally we could hear a commotion ahead. I tried to sneak up to backstab it while Lagasse moved up as quietly as he could.
I was too noisy, and missed the backstab. Everyone missed it, and Lyra was badly hurt. Lagasse killed it with a blow to the side, and it exploded as the other had. Mical and Lyra healed each other. After all the running, we slept like the dead.
