The Tower Revisited

It seemed like every time we headed toward the tower, it was more difficult to go. As usual, it was creepy and the air seemed heavy with despair. The dog was nearly crawling on her belly. Nothing attacked us on this trip, and no one fell through the floor. We climbed another set of stairs to the third level, carefully watching for weak spots in the steps.

During our return, the others, especially Lagasse, kept throwing jabs at me about Eskabar. Eventually, I kicked him, and pointed out that they were repressed and pig-headed. They didn't care, and continued having their fun. Besides, they should have been paying attention instead of picking on me.

The third level was a complete waste of time, excluding the stairs to the next floor. Those stairs were rickety and warped. Small rats squealed as they ran from us, disappearing into cracks in the walls. Two locked doors faced us when we reached the fourth floor. The locks were so rusted I could not pick them, so Lagasse and I broke down one of the doors.

The door crashed to the floor, dust flew, and we caught ourselves before falling out of the small window before us. Gray light filtered into the room, doing little to aid our vision. The room was empty.

Not so the other room. We began hearing whooshing noises behind the door. We broke down the door, finding ourselves in a bedroom. A bright blue light floated in a corner, then transformed into a transparent image of a man. The haunt floated toward us, passing through the bed without difficulty.

We backed out of the room and slammed the door. While we argued quietly about what to do, the door creaked open. The apparition flew at Lagasse, flailing its arms at him. Lyra, meanwhile, had been stuffing wax in her ears in case it was like a banshee, and I was staying out of the way. Mical stepped up, swung at the creature, and fell through the floor to his waist! He struggled to get out, but was helpless.

Lyra summoned a dust devil, which attacked the spirit. Dust and wind whipped around the room, battering the haunt as well as us. Lagasse kept slicing into it, and Mical even got lucky and hit it with his axes, but it just wouldn't die. It hit Lagasse once, then twice. Finally, it hit him again, and he looked noticeably clumsier. He kept nearly dropping his sword. Mical then started slipping through the hole.

Lagasse then hit the spirit one last time, and it slowly faded away into nothingness. We dragged Mical from the hole, and waited for Lagasse to feel normal again. Luckily it didn't take very long. The room turned out to have nothing of value.

We then found a hidden door and more stairs at the end of the hall. Inside was cold and dark, and appeared to be an old lab. The large tables were dusty, and the bookshelf was empty. Glassware, some of it filled with sludge, littered one table. Lagasse and I began smashing the bottles and beakers. Stress-relief!
