Important Finds
Past the metal door, my staff glowed brightly. I had never seen it so vibrant. The room held two comfortable looking cushioned chairs, a coffee table, a bookcase loaded with books, a chest, and a life-sized statue, with red gems for eyes, wearing black plate mail. An intricate hand-woven rug covered the floor. We laid Mical, still woozy, in one of the chairs and looked around.
The chest was not locked. Inside were a mercury-like potion, a fortune in platinum, an exquisite emerald, a decent diamond, leather boots, a burlap-covered package (about 2x2 foot square), and an ornate long sword. The sword's handle resembled the head of a dragon, with the blade emerging from the open mouth as if it were the tongue. The pommel held an emerald even better than the loose one, and the blade had an inscription. We were not familiar with the language. The staff seemed brightest when it was near the sword.
Most of the books were in a language none of us knew. One, however, was called "The History and Research of Dretchroyaster," and was written in Elven. Another book was called "Amulet of the Dracolich," although I could not read the text. We took both of those. I opened the burlap package, seeing the back of some framed item. I flipped it over, expecting another painting, but found me looking back at myself. I felt a little funny, but it passed. I placed the mirror with the other items to be checked for magic.
Only the potion, sword, and mirror were magical. The mirror and sword glowed especially bright. Although the statue's armor was not magical, Lagasse really liked it. He exchanged it with his own. It fit perfectly and looked quite good on him. Also, the statue's eyes didn't look particularly valuable, so I left them. I had tempted fate enough lately.
Mical scanned the Dretchroyaster book as he recuperated. It mainly discussed dragons, elves, and Myth Drannor. (Here are some excerpts from the Dretchroyaster section.)
We spent that night in the golem's room. We spoke of our options and tried to make sense of all we had learned. We tentatively decided that we should seek out Lobranth, if he still lived, and the other research lab in the Reaching Woods. We were both excited and concerned about our possession of the sword. Also, we hoped to learn exactly what a spelljammer was. Even I, with years of magical learning, had barely heard the word mentioned. And how was the staff related to the sword anyway?
